Six principles of effective writing

Whether you look at news media, advertising, websites or any other form of mass communication, the principles of good writing are the same. If you want to reach a broad audience, your writing should be...

  • simple
  • tangible
  • concise
  • personal
  • credible, and
  • about you.

The best book on writing is William Strunk Jr and EB White's The Elements of Style. It counsels writers to 'omit needless words' and, at just over 100 pages, follows its own advice. White also wrote Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little.

George Orwell's classic essay 'Politics and the English Language' also contains excellent writing advice. It's available free at several websites. Google it!

The Oxford Dictionary's website has an online guide to better writing.

Online style guides are available from:

  • The Guardian
  • The Economist.
