What is an 'editor'?

Editor: n. 1 a person who is in charge of a newspaper, magazine, or multi-author book. 2 a person who commissions written texts for publication. 3 a person who prepares texts or recorded material for publication or broadcasting. - Concise Oxford Dictionary.

When people hire an editor, it's not always clear what they're expecting.

As the dictionary definition explains, in newspapers and magazines, an editor has overall control of the staff and the content involved in the publication. The editor has final say over the publication's direction and tone, which stories to use, and all other aspects of content. In other words, the editor is the comms person and the project manager in one.

An editor can also be the person who 'repairs' a text - restructuring it and, in some cases, substantially rewriting it to make it more useful for its audience. This can be an intensive process.

A copy editor corrects grammar and spelling, makes minor writing amendments to improve readability, and may check facts, but doesn't make decisions about overall content.

A proofreader checks for spelling and grammar only.

We have experience in all of these roles. We're also experienced writers. The value and time commitment obviously varies depending on which part you're asking us to play.
